A document as visual media has its physical structure based on the writing system it uses, and presents various semantic fields dependent on its appearance. The present report reexamines diverse properties of visual structuring of Japanese documents from the point of view of electronic document interchange, referring to some Japanese Industrial Standards relating to document formatting and line composition rules.

Bibliography is a study that examines books externally and substantially, and has a role to offer basic knowledge in various fields of humanities, which make texts the main research objects. It is National Institute of Japanese Literature that has accumulated and disclosed the bibliographical data of early Japanese books as a useful data base. However, making a data base that contains substantial descriptions of books besides external data is tried by other organizations in recent years. In the future, overall data base together with data, description and image, which has the aspect of the history of the receipt and that of reading, will be required.

We have supported training in intellectual property information education for Yamaguchi University since April in 2004 based on the framework agreement between the university and Ube Industries Ltd. The aims of the support program are to promote uses of end-user oriented patent information retrieval system (NRI Cyber Patent Desk) and Japan Patent Office IPDL, and to train students in instructors for patent information search in the university. The course hours were 6 hours (3 times of 2 hours per session) in 2004 and 2005. The content of the course including lecture and practice in those two years was already reported. We increased course hours as requested by students to 9 hours (3 times of 3 hours per session) in 2006. Details of the course in 2006 and results of student questionnaire are reported in this article.
