The consolidation of text data base in hte humanities falls behind the times. Although each field of study strongly needs cooperative research, development operation on the conference level, or among conferences;the present condition is far from its intended purpose.
Data base in the humanities, having fixed users only, is no widely circulated at all. This situation has been caused mainly by two reasons. First, there is no proper software for research. Secondly, data base users avoid intervention of publishing companies.
Here, I would like to think about several conditions of data base development, on the assumption that there will be wide circulation, as well as introducingfs the data base I myself have developed.

Production of the Basic System for the English Sentence Database

lt is Important to collect huge amount of linguistic data and analyze them in a proper way for any linguistic research or language teaching. Recent technologlcal development enables us to approach these date in a drastically simpler way than before. However, just collecting or searching language data is not sufficient for the better linguistic or educational purposes. We have to store the selected date systematically, tagging a lot of relevant information with them. In other words, we have to rcorganize the selected data into a systematic database. We aimed to construct a highly workable system for the English sentence database. Specifically, our system has following advantages:
1. We can reduce and share most of the laborious work of data input.
2. We can Integrate the performance of the several ready made programs.
3. We adopt a data format adaptable to almost any kinds of database software for the further develpment of the data. 





画像データのCD-ROM化と歴史・文学研究への利用 
Preparation and Use of Image Data in CD-ROM for Studies on History and Literature

The author is interested in the use of image data for history and literature studies and proposes an easy and economical image input and retrieval system suitable for the research which is often carried out on personnel baSiS. Video cameras are controlled by an UNIX workstation and still images are extracted from video tapes. An automatic sense of additional information is proposed which includes the video-tape positions at the start of camera recordings and the geographical locations. The author connected a camera to a handy personnel computer and a sensing device for geographical location. The sensed information is stored in a floppy-disc of the PC and it is possible to search for images on a videotape taken by the camera effectively. The extracted and small sized still images are arranged and displayed in a window called image directories. In addition to the original still images, the sensed information and image directories are also stored in a disk or a CD-ROM.

Some problems on producing Japanese Classic Persons Database

We are proceeding to construct "Japanese Classic Persons Database" in The National Institute of Japanese Literature, Now, we have been inputting the thesaurus of many persons included in the Union Catalog of Japanese Old Books (Kokusbo-soumokuroku), This database is always opened by online real time system for reseachers, So, there are under many restrictions, for example, character-code-group or constructing method of database, and we need to consider these restrictions, I will debate on the subject how to construct designs of database and inputting method. 





源氏物語大成のフルテキストデータベース 
The Full-Text Database of Genji Monogatari Taisei

The quantitative analysis of sentences, the study of patterns formed in the process of linguistic encoding of information, has been applied to many important documents in foreign countries. However, it was first applied to Japanese documents only in the middle decades of the 20th century. The main reason for this delay is the following characteristic of the Japanese language. Japanese words are not separated by spaces as in English. Thus it is difficult for the computer to recognize word boundaries. The purpose of this study is to build a useful full-text database of Genji Monogatari for use in quantitative analysis. Using the Genji Monogatari Taisei published by Chuokoron-sha as a textbook, we divided all the sentences of Genji Monogatari into words to which were attached codes for parts of speech. In this paper we report how to build such a database and what difficulties we encountered in this process.

The Semantic Structure Model based on Analysis of Information

Meaning is a serious problem to be solved in many fields such as databases, natural language understanding, artificial intelligence etc. It is necessary to analyze property of information for semantic processing. This paper describes an information model called the semantic structure model which is based on property of information. The semantic structure model focuses on internal structure of concepts, overlapping among concepts and relativity of concepts. The semantic structure model is formulated as extened hypergraphs, and can handle properties of information mentioned above.

An Asymmetric relationship between scientific information presented as a potential fragment of 'specialized knowledge' and its scientific text : its problems and a solution

In everyday interactions, when people assert that they "transfer information" or "refer some knowledge", this is unavoidably done through 'texts' in a broad sense. That is also so in transferring new findings or ideas as 'scientific information' and integrating it into the relevant 'specialized knowledge'. The scientific phenomena and researchers' actions are presented through scientific texts. It has been already clarified, however, that the relationship between the former and the latter is asymmetric. This study tries to show the variability in the explanations in two different texts (i.e. original articles and author abstracts in medical science), both of which concern the very same scientific phenomena and researchers' actions. Analyzing by propositions and modality in these texts, it is shown that they present two different versions of scientific phenomena and researchers' actions. This means that we need to explore the relationship between scientific texts and their source phenomena, when we use the former for handling 'information' and 'knowledge'. 





シソーラスの概念関係にもとづく社会科学分野の主題構造の分析 
Analysis of Structure in Social Science Fields Based on Conceptual Frameworks in a Thesaurus

In this paper, a method how to define an inner structure of social sciences is proposed. Concepts and subjects of each scientific discipline are reflected in conceptual frameworks used for subject analysis such as classification schemes and thesauri. In the case of social sciences, Thematic List of Descriptors, a thesaurus of International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS), provides interdisciplinary relationships by cross-references across the four separate enumerative classification schemes of economics, political science, sociology, and cultural anthropology. An analysis of the Thematic List enables us to understand mutual overlapping of the subjects in social sciences. Since each descriptor operates as cross-reference in the Thematic List, the number of descriptors indicates the degree of relationships between given disciplines at the conceptual level. As a result, sociology proved to be closely related to the other three disciplines, especially to anthropology; 2,338 descriptors out of all the 6,486 descriptors are doubly referred to sociology and anthropology. On the contrary, the discipline containing least overlapping descriptors was economics, the most independent discipline. Also, the paper presents the inner structure in which subject areas subordinated to the four disciplines are connected by the descriptor links. 





文献データベースの計量書誌学的分析に基づく社会科学分野の学際領域の析出 
Identification of Interdisciplinary Areas in Social Sciences: A Bibliometric Analysis of IBSS Database

This paper attempts to reveal interdisciplinarity through analysis of the literature belonging to multiple subject bibliographies of the different disciplines in social sciences. The multidisciplinary literature was proved by extracting entries from International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS), a comprehensive bibliography in social sciences, which comprises four series of cultural anthropology, economics, political science and sociology. From 42,376 monograph records in the IBSS (1981-85), 2,007 items were identified as the multidisciplinary literature by detecting entries to be duplicate among the four series, and 993 items to which each classification number of economics and sociology were doubly assigned were found. The analysis of these items showed close relationships between the four disciplines. especially anthropology and sociology, and allowed us to obtain a cognitive map of interdisciplinary subject areas in social sciences. In particular, the paper suggests that the relationships between subfields in the disciplines are attributed to several common subjects in two or more subfields such as religion, ethnic groups, social stratification, population, labor, international relationship and so on.

Improvement of thesauri compiled automatically is reported in this paper. Translational glossaries are used as information sources, and this is a unique feature of the present method. Reliability and practicality of the method are illustrated with examples. The algorithm of the method and refinement methods are explained and the results of experiments are shown.
