In this article, a new technology called Information Visualization (IV) is viewed as an extension of scientific visualization. Three major technical streams relevant to IV are identified from the historical perspective, and current R&Ds on IV axe briefly overviewed. An IV-related issue ill the information and knowledge research is also addressed.

The computer visualization have been used in a various fields of science. Recently, these technology have been focused in the information area. This paper describes the effect in information visualization. It has become possible for the users to gain insights from the multi-dimensional data, the huge databases, and the time-dependent data. An usefulness of the visualization in this area is demonstrated with a few pictures using the visualization tool AVS/Express. 



**The Information Model for Semantic Understanding and Its Applications [#i4b218d4]

Thinking support functions are required for domain specialists to use information necessary for research and development. The thinking support systems should consist of semantic processing functions such as analogical resoning, induction, abduction and so on. However, conventional models of databases and representation languages of knowledge bases have very strict constraints to describe semantic relationships. The representation and storage of information based on the homogenized bipartite model is presented. Semantic relationships among concepts such as nested, many to many, dynamic and relative ones can be represented precisely. Based on the homogenized bipartite model an organic synthesis information model is constructed and the information is organized. Moreover, semantic processing functions such as analogical reasoning on structured information space are mentioned. 



**Fudamentals of Information as seen by Analyses of Terms of Renga [#w357f303]

As the followup of the former analyses of the frequencies of appearance of keywords of the chemical literatures which has revealed the dual characters of specificity and generality, the terms of renga has been analysed. Same results as above have been obtained. The sample terms of Renga have been classified, furthermore, into three codes of literature-, graphic- and factual natures according to the general schemes of presentation of information. The terms which belong to each code ha s shown the dual characters as cited above. Hence, it is concluded that the dual characters of generality and specificity and the presentation of information in the three modes form the bases of information and those bases can be studied by their frewquencies of appearance. 



**An Approach to Extract Keywords Comparing Multiple Documents [#h3654b00]

Today, most of the information retrieval systems are based on the keyword search method. Because extracting keywords from documents needs high expertise, it is costly and time consuming process. To improve this situation, automatic extraction of keywords from original documents(KWIC) is considered a promising method. In this paper, the author challenge to extract keywords based on statistical figures calculated from about 250 papers in information technology study. 50 to 70% of terms are conformed to be proper keywords. 



**Formulation and Evaluation of Queries Using Many Words [#c153ab0f]

The present study describes formulation and evaluation of queries for large objects such as entire fields of study, for Japanese textual data. The proposed method consists of decomposing Japanese textual data in several content groups and taking any word which shows markedly different relative frequency for a pair of groups as specifying the group in which it appears. The set of words is then used for retrieving texts belonging to the group. Abstract texts, in Japanese, each of about 2000 conference papers in three fields of study (information processing, agricultural chemistry and civil engineering) were downloaded from the GAKKAI database at National Center for Science Information System. About 1000 each of them were used for formulating queries, and the rest were used for evaluating the queries. In formulating the queries, texts were first decomposed into words by using MHSA (a multiple-hash screening algorithm for decomposing texts into words when there is no obvious delimiter). Relative frequencies of words in all the groups were measured and analysed. Two word lists, a general word list which includes all words appearing in each group, and a specific word list which lists words in a group whose relative frequency is markedly high or low in at least one group, were formed for each group. By using the specific word lists for retrieval, it was found that evaluation set of texts of the above three fields can be classified to the original group with an accuracy of about 96%.

To improve corporate image has emerged as one of the important challenges for businesses, in the age of more difficult discrimination of matured products and services, and varied relationships between businesses and society as well as businesses and consumers. On the other hand, however, the enlargement of the size of organizations and the diversified business have made the messages from businesses swollen. And this often leads to weaker corporate images and obscure management postures. Businesses that have communicated with their external world through mass media, are now confronted with multimedia towards more personal and more exposed communication. This study describes on the subject of corporate image and the multimedia which seems to have become a real scene, develops their interactive effects upon the corporate communication activities, and presents a future direction from a managerial viewpoint. 



**A try of the interpretation of the Baien Miura's main text "GENGO" on computer [#sdf2633a]

We edited the "GENGO" text on computer, and tried the interpretation of it. The "GENGO" text was written by Baien Miura who was the thinker at the middle of the Edo period. As a result, we discovered that it was the group of propositions for the logical model on the earth's ecological system, and that it was described with the clear construction. These facts suggest that the "GENGO" text was hypertext on paper media. We report the details of our try, and give an outline roughly about the project that we will edit the "GENGO" text on a hypertext system. 



**A new Stage of the Husserl-Database&br;---Doubled Data and Opening a Homepage --- [#r9537364]

Since a few years ago I am engaged in building the Husserl-Database with co-researchers. Husserl is a modern German philosopher (1859-1938) who let a lot of unpublished manuscripts. It is therefore worth while making his texts machinereadable and analysing them with a computer. Although we built full-text- database from his complete works "Husserliana", 5 volumes in the first year 1994, and would like to make them public, we could not get a permission from the Dutch publisher that have copyright of these works. So, we searched about 400 key words in our full-text-database and made only search results public with the name of "Husserl-Database" via FTP of the Internet in April of last year 1995. The Husserl-Database is accordingly a collection of search results of key words in "Husserliana". After then we built full-text-database from other 6 volumes in last year and added search results from these volumes to the Husserl-Database in April of this year. At the same time we have opened a Homepage of the Husserl-Database in WWW. By means of this Homepage it has become very easy and comfortable to access the Husserl-Database. We have achieved half of our aim, but our project is still underway. 



**Menu Planning and Semi-Automatic Recipe Generation from a Recipe Database and an Ingredient Knowledge Base [#c852582b]

The traditional database retrieval searches for data satisfying a given specification. In database-intensive applications, however, required information retrieval can be achieved only after some additional data processing has been performed. This paper reports our case study of a recipe database construction and its intelligent support of users to achieve more flexible and adaptive recipe retrieval. The kernel of the system is a database Of recipes and a knowledge base which records the ingredients classification and nutrition and the set of basic cooking methods for each ingredient. In addition to traditional recipe retrieval by pattern matching, the information retrieval part has two extended facilities; generation of a plan of recipes using case-based reasoning and simulated annealing, and semi-automatic modification of recipes marked by SGML tags. This case study is considered to show the potential feasibility of database systems to complicated scheduling tasks and intelligent adaptive retrieval.
