データベースは研究に影響を与えるか - 国文学研究資料館「日本古典文学本文データベース」利用者調査 -

The questionnaire has teen carried out to the frequent researchers for the full-text database of National Institute of Japanese Literature. The aim of this investigation is two, that is, 1) to know the activities of the researchers on using the database, and 2) to analyze hour to be available to their researches by the database.

Saga Prefecture Library holds massive documents of Saga-Han Government in the Edo period. Among them, there are financial annual reports on the accounting section of one hundred volumes from 1725 to 1857. I accomplished to make transcription and digitization of them in May 2001. In processing digitization, I have tried to take out metadata elements from the original materials. They are a set of information resources, and I have made a table of collective description for 24 metadata elements chronologically from 1725 to 1857. Also I tried to put explanatory about text file of transcription and structured table on the revenue and expenditure. My article is the issue that the metadata elements description is one of the means of guarantee on authenticity, reliability and preservation (or representations on both original and digitized materials.

A New Method for the Digital Organization of Ancient Document Research Data-the Sutra Collection of Kongouji Temple

This study presents a new method of organizing the digitization of research data which was developed during studies of the sutra col1ection of Kongouji Temple (in southern Osaka Prefecture, Japan). The proposed method covers: 1) data collection, particularly with respect to the recording and organization of digital photographs; 2)research analysis using a database structure which increases research efficiency; 3)research presentation, especially in humanities education settings.

We develop a database system for managing the data of the people and their relationships in Heian and Kamakura Periods of Japan. The system cannnot only retrieve persons from several genealogical tables but also find a key person between two given persons. Human relationships can be displayed as genealogical trees according to blood or denominations. Moreover we attempt to supply a registration method using GUI, where genealogical trees with level one are registered and later the trees are unified into larger ones. Since the information for data management such as the person's serial number is hidden, the users can register the records and view the genealogical tables without thinking of the database management system.

It is thought that internet is a final distribution channel of the rich contents such as movie, animation. TV program and so on. But that business model which reusing rich contents on Internet is not working well. The paper shows that a online contents should be the first distribution channel and the original work of rich contents.

On the Usage of Incremental Databases in the Archeological Research

This paper describes an attempt of using an incremental database management system DREAM in the archeological research. In DREAM, data can be stored without any definition. In this paper, relics of dishes and cups obtained from an archaeological site are stored into a database managed by DREAM.

A method for Extraction of Similar Words from Japanese Compound Nouns based on Bipartite Graph

This paper proposes a method for similar words groups extraction from nouns in a Japanese corpus. This method is based on maximal complete bipartite graph included bipartite graph made from compound nouns. In this bipartite graph, one node set tends to be a similar words group and the other node set to be a group of view point words, when the graph is maximal complete. Further, this method can give also similarity measurements between words using relations among those similar word groups.

The global flow of information is being developed at unprecedented speed. However, users can not sufficiently utilize huge amount of information by using conventional systems whose major functions are numerical calculation, symbol matching in information retrieval and deduction. Therefore, advanced utilization of contents of information are required. In order to realize such sophisticated utilization, it is necessary to understand meaning and characteristics of information. Therefore, the structurization is required to represent various semantic relationships among information. In order to satisfy such requirement, we proposed a new representation of such structure and made a system for self-organized knowledge resources based on semantic relationships. However, this system is a prototype and can not make enough structured knowledge resources to realize sophisticated utilization. Semantic relationships among knowledge resources must be correct and appropriate to objectives of applications. The main reason is that advanced utilization consists of navigation based on semantic relationships. Incorrect or inappropriate relationships influence such navigation. This paper reports problems which are classified and systematized at the method of an automatic extraction of hierarchical relationships which called SS-KWEIC because hierarchical relationships are the basis of semantic relationships in our concepts.

Editing Function in Graphical Visualization for Lexical Knowledge Base

The two dimensional graphical browser for lexical knowledge base such as thesauri has been developed our laboratory. However browsing functions is not sufficient as tools for handling lexical data because the attributes of a term object and the structure between objects change. The editing functions for lexical knowledge base with hierarchical structure has been developed. This paper describes the editing functions, and these examples of its usage. The problems of the functions and extended utilities are discussed

There are typical three kinds of of Amino acid Sequence Databases, PDB, pdb-aa,nr-aa. Originally these databases have their own format. However, each format seems as records of data, is not effective for advanced research such as homological search for amino acid sequences of proteins, ORF prediction. Experimental construction of XML database have been under construction to these databaseses for the purposes of efficient usage in related area. This paper reports the characteristics and problems on these databases.

ATR Human Information Science Laboratories, National Center for Industrial Proplerty Information 133,251 terms extracted from biological books and dictionaries were processed to automatically extract semantic relations among terms such as hierarchical and equivalent relations. A total of 2,574,099 relations were extracted. Extracted terms represent biological concepts, thus extracted relations define the biological conceptual structure. The network structure of constructed conceptual structure from a fixed viewpoint shows a structure of double scale-free network, with the border on concepts with 1,000 relations.

The Organization and Circulation System for Japanese Literary Research based on International Collaboration

From 2001 a new 5-years research project has been started in the National Institute of Japanese Literature, which is called the organization and circulation system for Japanese literary research based on international collaboration, founded by the Grant-in-Aid Scientific Research (S). The aim of the project is to construct the digital library system having functions as an archives center on Japanese literature, by, international joint program. The project has three R&D themes for organizing databases and systems of practical use, such as various research directories, shared collaboration circumstances, and meta-data with common protocol.

Information sharing system which handles various types of documents and records

In most libraries, people can search for books and periodicals using computerized bibliographic databases. However, the information needed may not necessarily be found in the books or periodicals searched. Valuable and useful information can often be found in such documents as conference materials and pamphlets. If searching for these documents through bibliographic databases were possible, then libraries could respond to the ever-increasing demands for more information. In this paper, I propose a Bibliographic Information Sharing System as a new means of information search to be used by libraries. The Application Service Provider (ASP) model was introduced to simplify system-designing. 1 believe that the ASP model will enable us to share information stored in different locations and that the model will be useful for various types of information sharing.

Towards a full-fledged digital archives: Experiments at the Japan Center for Asian Historical Records

The Japan Center for Asian Historical records of the National Archives of Japan (JACAR) was established in November 2001 for the purpose of providing through the Internet the index and the digital image information of historical records about modern Japan-Asia relations held and made available to the public by Japanese national institutions such as the National Archives of Japan, the Diplomatic Records Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Institute for Defense Studies of the National Defense Agency. The center is a full-fledged digitized archives providing about 2 million images and 100,000 catalogues as of March 2002 solely relying on Internet access. The function of the center is to provide users with digitized multi-page documents in a form that is faithful to the original, easily accessible, and searchable. In order to fulfill its objectives, the center introduced very unique technology and system such as the DVu document compression technology, a catalogue system relying on the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD (G)), and a digital dictionary for synonymous and related words specialized for Japanese modern history. This paper introduces these unique features of the center.
